Senior high school and college students, as well as on-site employees and Sisters of St. Paul University Manila, joined the 3rd Quarter Online Nationwide Simultaneous Earthquake Drill 2021, which was streamed live on Civil Defense PH’s Facebook page on September 16. The University’s participation was coordinated by the SPU Manila Readiness Efforts for Disaster (RED) Management.

“It is SPU Manila’s advocacy to instill among Paulinians the knowledge and preparedness for disasters,” Mr. Melvin Macuha, Moderator of RED Management, stated.

The objective of this exercise is for Paulinians to perform the Duck, Cover, and Hold technique in the event of an earthquake, whether they are at home, at work, or elsewhere.

Mr. Macuha added that these efforts situate disaster preparedness in the current context. “This school year will be the continuation of the many programs, like our participation in the quarterly earthquake drills, as readiness efforts to help ensure disaster preparedness amid the pandemic.”

When the alarm rang at 9:00 a.m., participants executed the Duck, Cover, and Hold simultaneously in their respective homes and offices. The evacuation part could not be practiced due to the risk of COVID-19 transmission.

“We thank all Paulinians — the senior high school and college students — Sisters, faculty, and staff, for actively participating during the 3rd Quarter Online Nationwide Earthquake Drill. Remember, Bida Ang Handa,” Mr. Macuha said.

The National Disaster Risk and Management Council announced that the 4th Quarter National Earthquake Drill will be held on November 11, 2021.
